The word "boundaries" has become so common it risks losing meaning. But the concept behind it is genuinely transformative: knowing what you need, communicating it clearly, and following through consistently.
Why boundaries feel hard
Many of us grew up in environments where saying "no" was equated with being selfish, difficult, or unloving. We learned to manage other people's emotions instead of our own. As adults, that pattern plays out in chronic overcommitment, resentment, and exhaustion.
What a boundary actually is
A boundary is a statement about your own behaviour, not a demand placed on someone else. "I won't attend family gatherings where alcohol is served" is a boundary. "You have to stop drinking" is an attempt at control. The first empowers you; the second leads to conflict.
How to start
- Identify the need. Where do you feel consistently drained, resentful, or violated? That feeling is information.
- Name the boundary clearly. Vague hints rarely work. Be direct, calm, and specific.
- Hold it. A boundary communicated once and then abandoned is not a boundary — it is a request. Consistency is what gives it meaning.
Boundaries take practice. Expect discomfort, especially at first. The people who respect your limits are the ones worth building with.
